An NHS Hospital in the Wirral that already hosts an exclusive cancer therapy has been provided with funding of a third of a million pounds to update and revamp their specialist unit.

The Unit specializes in Proton therapy that was pioneered for eye cancer patients twenty four years ago at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. To date, the Wirral establishment is the sole NHS Trust in the United Kingdom to provide such a therapy.

With the funding, and additional cash from the NHS Trust,  a brand new proton therapy chair, designed and made in Switzerland, and only one of three in the world, has been delivered to the unit to continue their work on cancer treatment. The chair is designed to hold patients in optimum position for a proton beam to be directed directly into the cancerous tumour. Prior to such revolutionary treatment, the removal of the affected eye was the only known option for patients.
