I had not heard of Behçet's disease but I had heard of its other term of adamantiades.
It is an autoimmune disease that unfortunately results from damage to the carriers blood vessels throughout the body, in particular the veins. A patient suffering from an autoimmune disease, will have their immune system attack their body's own tissues.
Doctors are not sure as to the exact cause of the disease but it is likely that an autoimmune reaction causes the patients blood vessels to become inflamed, the trigger for such a reaction is not known still.
Behçet's disease can affect each person differently.
The main symptoms to be aware of are mouth and genital sores, inflammation to the inside of the eye, and also general skin problems. Uveitis, retinitis, and iritis occurs in more than half of patients diagnosed with Behçet's disease and with it comes blurred vision redness and pain. Secondary symptoms include arthritis, blood clots, and central nervous system inflammation including in the digestive organs.
Behçet's disease is usually treated via focus on pain reduction and discomfort and the prevention of further complications. There is no cure for it. Corticosteroids and medications that help suppress the patients immune system may be prescribed to treat any inflammation.
Behçet's is a recurrent chronic disease but patients may be free temporarily from symptoms depending on the severity of it in each person. Many can continue living normal lives but there is danger for others of blindness or physical disablement.
