Heart Disease Warning Signs Via The Eyes

Heart Disease Warning Signs Via The Eyes

Looking into a persons eyes has long been linked with the notion of looking into someones soul. The eyes themselves can portray anger, fear and many other emotions and thoughts without necessarily consciously making the decision to portray that feeling to those around you. A new study in America has also highlighted the possibility of seeing small changes in the eye which reflect possible health issues for the person concerned. In particular, the case revolves around American of black ethnicity with type 1 diabetes. The changes to the eyes in this demographic are believed to represent early warning signs of impending or current heart conditions.

The research programme focused on the narrowing of small arteries in the eye, and to be more specific the retina. Although not something that has been clinically proven or endorsed as fact in the past, similar assertions have been made by doctors and ophthalmologists regarding the link between heart disease, thinning arteries and in some cases vitamin C.

Research statistics:

  • All patients studied were of black ethnicity
  • All patients studied were residents of the USA
  • All patients studied were sufferers of type 1 diabetes
  • All patients were studied regarding the effects of time (6 years) and the onset of health issues

The information researched showed that after this 6 year period between follow ups, 12.6% of the patients went onto to develop some form of cardiovascular disease with a further 16.8% subject to an increase in blood pressure.
