Longer Life Expectancy, Larger Growth In The Ophthalmic Industry

high growth expected in ophthalmics industry

A new report into the growth of the ophthalmic industry indicates an expectation that the market will continue to grow during the next 4-5 years at rates of up to 12%. By 2015 it is estimated that the UK market for goods and services will total almost £3.5 billion.

One of the major influences on this growth expectation is down to the UK populations average life expectancy, which continues to improve. However, while we may be living longer, like many other sectors, we are expected to become an increasing burden on major services that we rely upon as such good health is not something many had planned for. As our age increases, so does our requirements for additional help, specifically medically and in this case eye wear, testing and treatment of vision related conditions to be more even more specific.

On top of this, an ever increasing 'westernisation' of our society sees many consumers eager to follow fashion and aesthetically pleasing products, and as such the demand for ever developing glasses, frames, lenses and so on continues to increase also. One of the strongest sectors in terms of growth, is in deed that of glasses and spectacles.

The report conducted by Key Note covering Ophthalmic Goods and Services throughout the period of 2011 estimates that by 2015 we shall see:

  • 12% increase in market for goods and services to £3.4 billion
  • 12.3% increase in market for goods to £2.9 billion
  • 9.9% increase in market for sight testing to £510 million
