New Figures Show An Increase In UK Contact Lens Users

With constant news reports confirming that we are indeed in a double dip recession, it is nice to hear that certain aspects of the economy are growing and particularly the expansions of areas in the optics market. New figures regarding the use of contact lenses in the UK for 2011 shows a 2% increase in turnover with hopes that 2012 will also see similar growth patterns to boost an ever more technological market.

For the year 2011, the Association of Contact Lens Manufacturers have released results showing that the total size of the UK contact lens market stood at £231 million, and increase of around £4.5 million and 2%. With new technological advancements seeming to be on tap, so to speak, consumers have been eager to try new eye wear and more potential buyers have been drawn to new more comfortable and durable products than have ever been available before. Even though the times of glasses being unfashionable are long behind us, popularity in contact lenses continues to increase.

  • The majority of wearers (58%) wear daily disposables
  • Silicone hydrogel lenses has seen a dramatic increase in take up with 10% more people now using them
  • 7.5% of the UK population are now registered contact lens wearers
