Opticians Suffer During UK Riots

Along with the rest of the UK, many opticians are reporting criminal damage to their premises and theft of their stock during what has been an appalling week on the streets of England. With the eyes of the world upon us, and in particular the events unfolding in London, practices are doing all they can to get back on their feet.

Following the disturbances in Tottenham, North London, violence has spread across the country with vandals pushing the police to their limits in their attempts to protect our businesses. Branches of Specsavers and Vision Express have reported significant losses and damages, causing shops to close for repairs and staff safety reasons. The widespread disruption in Birmingham alone, is estimated to be accounting for around £2.5 million per day in lost revenue and trade for local companies covering retail, food and drink.

While many big department stores and large chains are feeling the brunt of many of the rioting looters due to the large availability of expensive stock and products, independent eyewear stores and opticians are also having to deal with the sickening scenes that have played out across the news this week with large numbers having to begin the big clear up this week as they look to rebuild their shops and livelihoods.
