Pioneering Cataract Surgery Takes Place in London

Optician’s from far and wide were invited by Bausch + Lomb to observe pioneering eye surgery at the Centre for Sight in East Grinstead in London on 11th July 2011. One of the procedures covered the use of a femtosecond laser for use in cataract removal surgery.

A live feed was installed within the operating theatre and was beamed out to optometrists and ophthalmologists in the waiting room next door. This opportunity was one not to be missed, offering an amazing insight into new surgeries available for patients with treatable eye conditions.

Eye specialist Dr Sheraz Daya, fitted an implantable contact lens in one patient's eye. A second patient also had cataract surgery leaving enough time to treat a third patient in the same afternoon. Dr Daya has famously been treating the celebrity Katie Piper whose vision, amongst a range of other complications and physical issues, was badly damaged in an acid attack. Optometrists were invited along to learn more about Femtosecond Laser cataract removal surgery. With access to our NHS cataract surgery under the spotlight again, the efficiency of yesterday's treatment confirmed it is all about the funding, and certainly not quality care, that is sadly missing.
