A slit lamp is a piece of optical equipment consisting of a high-intensity light source, in conjunction with a biomicroscope. This can be focused to shine into the eye, a sheet of light. The slit lamp is used to examine many areas within the anterior segment and the posterior segment of the eye. This can included the eyelid, sclera, conjunctiva, iris and the lens. Using a slit lamp provides a stereoscopic, magnified view of the eyes structure in great detail. Slit lamps can enable anatomical diagnosis for many varied conditions of the eyes. Slit lamps are available in both Haag Streit style and Zeiss style.
