Ageing Doesn't Guarantee Sight Loss

Ageing Doesn't Guarantee Sight Loss

What happens as we grow old? Well ask any mature friend and they will tell you everything, in detail it would seem. Your knees go, more often than not your bladder also. Everything begins to ache, people become more rude, things have changed since their day... I digress. In essence, the point I am trying to make is that common conception is that as you age in numbers, your body begins to deteriorate and one of the more difficult elements to come to terms with is that of sight loss. Now going blind in old age is by no means a guarantee, and far from it. However, as the years go by we become more likely to need glasses for certain elements of day to day life, eye conditions start rearing their ugly head and as such the quality of your vision can be impaired or lessened from more youthful years. Or is that actually true? Is age a guaranteed precursor to visual deterioration?

According to research and studies by the RNIB, or the Royal National Institute of Blind People, while age is something we cannot fight, it does not necessarily mean that our vision and quality of sight follows a predetermined path from which we are unable to deviate from. The main thing that we can do it would seem is follow all those nagging warnings that we keep hearing, "visit an optician regularly for check ups." It might sound simple, but by simply being checked out by an optician every 1-2 years as recommended is the perfect way for an eye specialist to notice any changes in your visual abilities, eye itself or any conditions which may be beginning to show and in being diagnosed early can be treated.

In line with keeping on top of optician visits, making sure that you use the right prescriptions for your glasses if needed or contact lenses ensures that your eyes are always receiving the right level of help so that they stop in tip top condition. Using the wrong lenses can indeed have a harmful effect if they are too strong or weak for your eyes current needs. Finding early signs of glaucoma can also have a big effect as treatments can begin early and other issues such as cataracts can be closely monitored.

As with all things in life and living an enjoyable life, one thing will never be far from a health professionals lips, healthy living. Fruit, vegetables, exercise, they all help your body maintain ideal conditions.
