Don't Be Vain : Be Safe

It has been reported that there are millions of road users aged in the 35 to 55  years age bracket that get behind the wheel while not being able to see adequately. The study has announced that twenty percent of middle aged drivers knowingly drive while having poor eyesight risking accidents and the health and safety of themselves and other people.

The study completed by the College of Optometrists also revealed that in addition to driving with poor eye sight, 9% of middle-aged British workers also  operate heavy machinery. A staggering 28 per cent of the subjects studied said they had put off booking an optical eyesight test for up to 6 months after they noticed their vision was deteriorating and a further fifth of those had postponed the notion of an eye test for up to 5 years.

It would appear that the reasoning behind such delays was mainly down to an issue of vanity! With just under half of the people sating they having to don a pair of spectacles would make them feel older. many of the subjects admitted that it wasn't a priority event to see their opticians to seek advice and 18 per cent of the subjects were put off by the probable cost of being prescribed corrective lenses or glasses.

In the vanity stakes, it would appear that both men and women were guilty however the study showed that it was the  middle-aged men  who were the poorest in eye health care with almost one in three declaring that an eye sight test wouldn't be sought if they themselves noticed a deterioration in their eyesight.
