Don't Let Your Eyes Suffer Through Your Diet

With the focus this week on vision matters, the push is on spreading the word how important eye health is. Many of us take to the gym or play sport for our physical and mental well being but a surprising percentage of us are at risk of incurring eye sight difficulties in the future as we are ignorant that what we eat may also affect the health of our vision.

Findings report that most of us do not consume a number of essential nutrients we need to maintain healthy eyes and safeguard good vision. Nearly half of the subjects don’t eat enough lutein-rich leafy vegetables and  52% don’t consume enough oily fish, rich in Omega-3 which, according to government guidelines, we should have at least one portion of a week.

A balanced diet, rich in vitamins A, C and E,  oily fish and lutein rich leafy green vegetables, may help safeguard  our eye health and protect against eye diseases such as  Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Too many of us understand the links between poor diet and conditions such as heart disease but rarely is such consideration given to the health of our eyesight.  AMD is the leading cause of blindness in the western world, and the statistics of sufferers of the disease is set to rise as we are an aging population.

Try to keep to a balanced healthy diet, rich in Vitamins, Omega 3 and antioxidant vitamins, and at least 5 pieces of fruit a day.
