Dry Eye, An Irritation No More

Dry Eye, An Irritation No More

Dry eye syndrome is a condition that can occur when the eye is unable maintain the correct layer of tears to coat and protect it. When this happens, the eye can then begin to sting or burn, but as the name suggests, starts to feel dry and as such can give you the feeling of having sand or grit in the eye. In any case, the condition can leave a sufferer with irritations and can also be recognised through a reduction in visual acuity. In essence, as the eye is unable to moisturise itself efficiently, most treatments focus on drops or liquids of some kind in order to re hydrate and remove the irritable symptoms and signs.

So if you find yourself with a dry eye condition, what are the most effective treatments available in order to combat that sandy feeling in your eyes?

  • Eye Drops (Prescribed or Not) From Your GP
The most obvious point to start from is by contacting an optician or GP regarding your eye health concerns and as such you will more than likely be offered eye drops by prescription to combat the problem. Normally, drops will need to be administered to the eye twice a day and are usually able to be used continuously.
  • Ophthalmic Beads
Again, only available by prescription via a medical specialist, these beads are place into your lower eyelids, allowing them to dissolve and while mixing with your own tears will hydrate your eyes. This is usually a method undertaken after all other options have failed.
  • Eye Bath or Wash
A simple eye bath can be an effective way to sooth irritable eyes. In conjunction with the soothing sensation, an eyelid wash can also remove any debris present which could be scratching at soft and sensitive tissues in the eye.
  • Oil Supplements
We take oil supplements for our joints and muscles and the same can be helpful with dry eye. Eating fish or taking supplements of omega-3 fatty acids can see a 1/3 risk reduction in your chances of suffering from dry eye syndrome.
  • Warm Compresses
Sometimes, your eyes and glands can become blocked and as such can start to function poorly when trying to lubricate the eyes with natural oils and tears. Placing a warm, wet towel or flannel over your eyes for a period once a day can help remove blockages and allow your eyes to naturally hydrate properly.
