European Council of Optometry and Optics Introduce Accreditation Scheme

The ECOO, or European Council of Optometry and Optics have confirmed the introduction of an accreditation scheme which will allow specialists to opt out of all or part of the European Diploma of Optometry. The diploma which is currently recognised as the pinnacle of optometry standards, carries with it a fairly high and off putting price tag. This new scheme is hoped to give European teaching institutions the ability to gauge their qualifications against the EDO.

The first exams for the current European Diploma in Optometry began in 1998 and was seen as somewhat of an educational landmark in Europe. Although the accreditation signifies the 'gold standard' of the optometry profession, but along with its high rewards, the accompanying large financial costs have been a drawback for many. Following meetings between EAOO and the AOP, plans have been put forward to attempt to create a European standard for optometric and optical services, giving specialists a template to work against to ensure patients receive clinically safe and effective treatment at all times.

This is not the first time that such an accreditation scheme has been put forward. The ECOO scheme has already been trialed in a number of European countries including Norway and Switzerland. With over 30 European countries currently members of the ECOO, the plans are expected to be rolled out across Europe as plans move from their development stage to a more concrete structure of blueprints.
