Eye Disease: No Treatment?

There is an eye disease that will clear without medical treatment. It effects the thin tissue layer that covers the white of the eye often without any infection. It is called Episcleritis.

The main causes are largely unknown, but it can appear in tandem with other diseases, such as Rheumatid arthritis, herpes zoster, sjogren syndrome, syphilis or tuberculosis. One of the main symptoms which is most noticeable is that the whites of the eye will take on a pink or purple hue. Sufferers will experience pain in the eye and tenderness, it may tear up more than usual and you may find yourself photosensitive. Its adviseable to stay out of bright lights and seek and eye examination to confirm the diagnosis. It is unlikely that a special test will be needed.

Episcleritis will usually diminish and evetually  disappear completely without treatment in 1 - 2 weeks. Patients can be administered with corticosteroid eye drops which may assist in relieving the symptoms faster.

Its possible for the disease to make a return visit , rarely, irritation and inflammation of the white part of the eye may develop. This is commonly called scleritis. Should any of the symptoms persist once episcleritis has been diagnosed for longer than two weeks or if you have increased pain then you should seek medical assistance via your G.P or optician.
