Eye Examination Shows Undetected Brain Tumour

A routine check-up at her opticians resulted in Jan Whitehouses’ worst nightmare. Her routine check up at her local Vision Express in Lichfield led to an emergency MRI and the discovery of a brain tumour. The optician had noticed an abnormality in her retina during his test.

Within two days, Mrs Whitehouse was admitted to the emergency admissions unit at Burton Queens Hospital and the terrible news was unfolded. She had a benign brain tumour.

Mrs Whitehouse was Head of Biology and Science at Burton College from 1995 to 2007 and bizarrely, some of her past students were now medical staff at the hospital. Once she was recognised by some of her former pupils their support and care was second to none. She said ‘I felt privileged to have taught such caring, hard working people’

Jan now faces another uncertain MRI in July to check on, if any, changes to the tumour. This will also result in a decision as to whether the tumour can be removed.

This story certainly highlights the importance of regular eye tests. Not only are these highly trained eye specialists there to check your vision for spectacles, but they can also, as its been proved, find any early problems that hopefully can be treated.
