Eye Lid Problems

Sagging eye lids, lower eye lids in particular is a condition called Ectropion. The condition makes the eye dry as it is left exposed and if it is left untreated the condition can lead to chronic tearing, redness, eye irritation, crusting of the eyelid, a gritty irritation feeling, mucous discharge, and breakdown of the cornea due to exposure.  The condition is the result of tissue relaxation associated with aging. It is also an occurance as a result of facial nerve paralysis which sufferers experience via Bell’s palsy, stroke or other such nuerologic conditions, also it may occur after trauma, previous surgeries , scarring from previous surgery or skin cancer.
The cause of Ectropion is because the  inner normally wet conjunctival surface is exposed and visible. When the eyelids are in their normal position the upper and lower lids close quite tight thereby protecting the eye from any external damage and preventing evaporation of tears. If  one eyelid turns outward and the two lids cannot meet properly the tears are not then spread evenly over the eye. Symptoms may include excessive tearing, chronic irritation, redness, pain, a gritty feeling, crusting of the eyelid and mucous discharge.  Surgery can repair the discomfort from ectropion often with very little post-operative discomfort.  The surgery will leave your eyes comfortable and they will also be  protected from corneal scarring, eye infections, and loss of vision.
