Following successful trials of their new cataract laser removal system, OptiMedica has had its breakthrough Catalys system cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration and approval for use. The Califronia based ophthalmology company recently had their new Catalys system used for the first time in the treatment of a patient in Bochum, Germany.

The Catalys system offers cataract suffering patients a much safer technology to take advantage of as it decreases the amount of ultrasound energy that may be required in breaking down cataracts ready for extraction. The system incorporates a femtosecond laser (designed for faster, more accurate and safer cataract breakdown), an integrated OCT, or optical coherence tomographer and OptiMedica's pattern scanning technology.

OptiMedica had already received the CE mark approval for the Catalys system, meaning that the US company can now market the product across America and Europe. The follows rival company Bausch and Lomb's recent CE approval for a similar system, the Victus, which also makes use of a femtosecond laser, performing both cataract and refractive procedures.
