Over in the United States there are concerns that a recall of contact lens solution made by Advanced Medical Optics has not been heeded.
The US Food & Drug Administration has reported their concern that there are still users of the product and rightly so as there have been numerous reports of acanthamoeba keratitis break outs linked to the solution made to the United States Centres for Disease control and prevention.
In Spring of last year the Complete Moisture Plus Multipurpose Contact Lens Solution was ordered off shelves because of links to the parasite that causes the condition.
Patients already using the product were told to cease the use with immediate effect and destroy bottles already opened and yet unused.
The infection is generally rare in wearers of soft lenses but if contracted can become serious quite rapidly. It generally comes about due to pure hygiene and improper handling of the lenses.
Acanthamoeba are minute one celled animals that cause the conditions as they thrive in water sources. It can be a difficult condition to treat and at its most grave can render the patient in need of a corneal transplant.
