RNIB Campaign For Improved Wet AMD Patient Care

Following a campaign from the RNIB, community optometrists are being called to improve services in regards to the sight of wet AMD patients. The concern comes about from delays in diagnosis'. In a similar vein, the Royal National Institute of Blind People are also worried about a patients quick and easy access to wet AMD services.

A recent study into wet AMD diagnosis by the RNIB showed that almost 7 in 10 cases were being diagnosed OUTSIDE of the recommended seven days, a figure that has alarmed the charity. Due to the speed at which wet AMD can progress and cause permanent sight loss or deterioration, the charity feel such delays are unacceptable. Such small timescales can make such a great difference when it is considered that in just 12 weeks such vision loss can occur. It is estimated that almost 75% of wet AMD sufferers first port of call is an optometrist and as such can help saving the sight of patients through fast actions.

The RNIB urges that all optometrists follow their local rapid referral guidelines and act as a matter of urgency should wet AMD be a possible diagnosis. Treatment is recommended to begin within 1 week and other possible time delays such as GP referrals were adding to the problems.

  • Patients are concerned by delays caused by referrals between medical professionals
  • 33% feel inadequately unsupported during the diagnosis period
  • RNIB encourages those over the age of 50 years old to be particularly wary of potential signs
